A creative and effective way for schoolkids to cope with the sirens and rockets
Here's the thing:  this approach isn't just for kids anymore.  

Here are 5 TIPS ON HOW NOT TO BE TRAUMATIZED BY THE “SITUATION”

TIP #1:  RECOGNIZE and ACCEPT the situation, even if it’s lousy, and PREPARE PROPERLY.  YOU CAN BE IN CONTROL even if things are crazy.   That’s what the kids are doing – learning to recognize the sound and drilling.     

TIP #2:  NOTICE your body’s arousal and stress reactions and ACCEPT them.  The kids sing:  “My heart’s beating, boom boom, boom, My body’s shaking, doom doom doom.”   What are you noticing in your body?   
AFTER THE EVENT IS OVER:  THERE ARE A FEW MORE VERY IMPORTANT STEPS:

TIP #3:  RELEASE ALL THAT PENT-UP NERVOUS ENERGY AND EMOTION THAT’S STILL INSIDE YOU. This is CRITICAL, and is OFTEN OVERLOOKED. 
In the video, the kids sing, shake out their bodies and legs, breathe in and out deeply, and laugh.  All a very matter-of-fact part of the post-event recovery. This is VERY IMPORTANT.
CHECK OUT YOUR OWN BODY AND SEE HOW YOU’RE FEELING.  You may find yourself shaking, trembling, laughing, crying, agitated, needing to move around.  That’s all normal and perfectly OK.  Don’t fight it.  In fact, make sure it happens:  Dance.  Sing.  Wiggle.  Wriggle.  Shake it out.   Laugh.  Cry.  Move.  Whatever you need, whatever feels good.  GET IT ALL OUT. 

TIP #4:  GRATITUDE AND CELEBRATION.  Give yourself and those around you a great big cheer!  You earned it.  You deserve it.   Remember:  Gratitude is a great antidote to stress and fear.  

TIP #5:  SOCIAL SUPPORT.  These kids didn’t do it alone.  They had each other and their teachers.  So get support from your friends, family and community.   Social support reduces stress.
